Understanding Remedial Education

When a bright child still struggles to learn

A remedial educator works with children who find specific academic areas hard — whether because of lower intellectual ability for their age, or average-to-higher ability paired with a specific learning difficulty. We use targeted teaching strategies to help each child reach a comfortable level of functioning in school.

A remedial therapist is not a tutor. A tutor makes a child practise the same thing repeatedly; a remedial educator works on the underlying skill. For a child with dyscalculia, for example, we don't just drill sums — we teach easier strategies to truly understand numbers and facts.

We support children diagnosed with Specific Learning Disorder (SLD/LD), ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Intellectual Difficulties (ID) and other neurodevelopmental concerns, with programmes designed around their specific areas of difficulty so they can perform well in school.

Areas we work on

  • Reading skills — reading and understanding information
  • Writing skills — spelling, handwriting, written expression
  • Math skills — basic and advanced
  • Information processing — perception and memory
  • Study skills
  • Social skills
  • Functional academics

Signs your child may benefit

You know your child best. If several of these feel familiar, a friendly assessment brings clarity — with no pressure.

Reads or writes well below grade level

Reverses letters or numbers, or struggles with spelling

Finds maths concepts unusually hard

Poor handwriting or written expression

Difficulty remembering or processing information

Avoids schoolwork or is losing confidence

Struggles to organise, plan or study independently

Falling behind despite genuine effort

When to act

Why early support matters

If your child is putting in effort but still falling behind — or starting to lose confidence in school — don't wait for them to ‘catch up’ on their own.

A remedial assessment identifies the real gap and a targeted plan closes it before frustration and low self-esteem set in. The earlier the right strategies are taught, the sooner learning becomes enjoyable again.

Common questions

Remedial Education — your questions answered

A tutor reteaches and repeats the same school content. A remedial educator works on the underlying skill that's missing — using specialised strategies so the child can learn independently, not just memorise.

A learning disability means a child of average or above-average ability has specific, persistent difficulty in an area such as reading (dyslexia), maths (dyscalculia) or writing (dysgraphia) — despite normal effort and teaching.

Many children make strong progress with the right, consistent remedial support. We set realistic goals and track progress so improvement is clear and confidence grows.

Where it helps, we guide parents on school accommodations and work alongside teachers so the same strategies support your child in the classroom.
