Understanding articulation

When people say "I can't understand your child"

Articulation is how clearly a child produces speech sounds. An articulation disorder means certain sounds are substituted, omitted, or distorted — so strangers (and sometimes family) struggle to understand. Common patterns include lisping (s), wabbit for rabbit, or missing sounds in words.

Hope CDC's speech-language pathologists in Pune use evidence-based articulation therapy — auditory discrimination, correct placement cues, and repetitive practice through play — at our Kharadi and Dhanori centres.

Articulation issues are different from speech delay (not enough words) and stammering (fluency). Your child may have one or a combination — we assess all three domains.

Why articulation therapy works

Speech sounds develop in a predictable sequence, but some children need direct teaching to master sounds their peers acquired naturally. Without support, unclear speech can affect social confidence, reading (phonics), and classroom participation.

Articulation therapy is highly effective — most children show clear improvement within a few months of consistent sessions.

Our approach

How we help at Hope CDC

1

Speech sound assessment

We identify which sounds are in error and whether patterns are developmental or disordered.

2

Individualised sound targets

Therapy focuses on one or two sounds at a time — mastered before moving on.

3

Play-based drill & practice

High-repetition practice disguised as games — keeping children engaged.

4

Generalisation to conversation

Moving from words → sentences → everyday talking with home carryover.

Typically 3–9 months depending on the number of sounds and practice at home. We track progress every session.

Some children with ASD have articulation challenges, but unclear speech is common without autism. Full assessment clarifies.

Yes. We support children growing up with Hindi, Marathi, and English — assessing sound patterns appropriately.
